Scale Computing -> Best Value
- Setting up and provisioning a new VM is super simple.
- I come from a VMWare environment but the Scale UI is very easy to understand. I can imagine for someone new they would be able to learn the task of managing the cluster very easily.
- Snapshots and clones are processed super fast.
- I would like to be able to see actual disk availability instead of the raw number of TB.
- The ability to copy and paste from your local machine to a VM seems like missing functionality, it is very useful to have.
- I guess it's not a problem specifically with Scale, probably more with KVM and backup vendors but I really did enjoy having a backup system that worked across the whole hypervisor, it just simplified things a lot.
- I would like to see the breakdown of the VMs and the amount of RAM they are consuming changed a bit. If its a VM with less than 6 GB it doesn't show on the dashboard. Maybe if it was a pie chart it would be easier? Not sure but just something different would be nice so you could see all the VMs.
Scale Review
- Management. It is very easy to manage your environment through one pane of glass. You know the health of your hardware by just looking at the main page.
- Support. Their support is all based here in the U.S. They are very timely to get to you, and they keep you informed throughout your issue.
- Price. They are very well priced for what you get.
- Compatibility. Some manufactures don't have products that will run on the KVM kernel.
The only thing I could think that would not be the best scenario for Scale Computing HC3 is in extremely large companies.
Medium Size School Using Scale Computing HC3
- Very simple easy to use UI.
- No driver issues.
- Support has been top notch.
- The HC3 solution did not play nicely with our aging core switch, so we had to upgrade that as well.
- There was not support for transferring old application servers 2008 and under.
- I would like to see thermal readings in the UI.
Scale Computing HC3 allows IT to reclaim time!
- Simplicity is the number one priority for us. It's very simple to spin up a virtual machine and have it up and running quickly.
- Customer support has been fantastic. When we have an issue, usually Scale contacts us before we even realize there is some sort of issue going on.
- Setting up and installation has also been very simple. In the past, we tried traditional 3-2-1 virtual infrastructure but having storage, networking, and compute tied together has made it much easier for our IT department to be able to deploy new items in a timely manner.
- There are times when the alerts can be a little vague if you don't contact customer support to get a clarification of what might be wrong.
- I would like to see some integrated backup support at some time, and not have to use a third-party agent on each virtual machine.
Scale Computing, Simple, Cost Effective, Reliable
- Lowering cost on virtual licensing.
- Ease of use.
- Above average support.
- Being able to export virtual machines back into VMware without a 3rd party product.
- The interface should include how much hard drive space is being utilized in a windows environment without having to log into the server.
- Increase integration into other platforms such as agentless backup solutions. One is in the works with Acronis, but having multiple options would be preferred.
For those business that need more reporting, this is not the solution for you.
Scale Computing - Hyper-Convergence
- Scale offers a great dashboard for viewing VM details.
- Installation of clusters is much simpler than other VM platforms.
- Console view of VMs is in web browser and clientless, which makes administration from any machine simpler.
- I would like to see the ability to mount snapshot points in time rather than having to clone a full machine in order to access older data. I believe this is being released in the latest version, but we had a difficult time restoring data without creating a Linux machine and mounting a disk.
- Import and export of VMs isn't as easy as other platforms. Third party tools had to be used to import VMs. Exporting VMs would require the same time and expense.
- I would like to see more access to back end disk data rather than relying on support. I know Scale is targeted to shops with smaller IT departments and the support is great, but I had to go through support in order to get a disk list on the cluster when I could have just done that myself.
HC3 - Truly a breath of fresh air.
- The world's simplest host and storage administration, period.
- Built-in site-to-site replication for one-click DR.
- Excellent performance, easily surpassing the "big guys" -- more cost-conscious hardware solutions get the job done just as well, if not better, than top-tier systems using much more expensive hardware.
- A support experience that cannot be rivaled. Just open a trouble ticket and see for yourself!
- At-rest encryption currently requires a 3rd-party product.
- Would really benefit from a user interface or wizard for creating boot media/migrating common hosts to HC3 (maybe options for physical, Hyper-V, VMWare).
Hidden Gem For Education CTOs
- Customer Support - A level of service that all vendors should strive to reach. Their customer service is equally fast and reliable as the product. In the two years of having the HC3, we experienced one hard drive failure. The support team was assisting us within minutes, had the drive replaced in less than 24 hours, and had our node fully functional with no disruption in service nor any data loss.
- Migration - One of the quickest and easiest among all VM solutions. Older Windows operating systems had compatibility issues, but all servers running Windows Server 2003 and higher migrated within minutes with two simply clicks.
- Reliability - The HC3 manages to work seamlessly in real-time with no indication from the end user during maintenance, recovery, or making changes to the VMs. In two years, we have had only one hard drive issue and no software issues.
- Simplicity - The HC3 has the best of both worlds. It's simpler than the free Hyper-V and includes most tools one needs within VMware, yet the installation, operation, and recovery is leaps and bounds easier to manipulate.
- The only negative is the maintenance support costs. What a dilemma Scale has as they produced a robust and reliable product yet the support costs for a 3 node system is almost $6000. After paying this for 2 years and only having one hard drive failure, I have spent $12,000 on one support ticket and three software updates. It defeats the maintenance cost savings.
Extremely Happy With Scale Computing
- "Single pane of glass" management is fantastic. So it is easy to make changes to compute and storage settings.
- System Reliability: the system has been completely reliable. Ran flawlessly when a disk was lost. Replacing the disk was easy and rebuilt without any issues. Upgrading versions was easy and without issues.
- Support: has been exceptional. Very easy and fast to reach and helpful with every question or concern that we've asked them.
- Migration from our old servers went flawlessly. The third party vendor that installed and migrated us did an excellent job.
- Built-in secure remote ability that I can enable or disable is awesome.
- Reducing storage space is a bot more involved than any other processes but I've never had to do that.
Easy Virtualization with Scale
This has been very reliable. Scale serves as our main infrastructure and DR.
- Disaster Recovery is excellent.
- Server provisioning is easy and quick with templates.
- Server backups are easy.
- For our purposes, we don't have any cons.
Scale Computing HC3 saved our IT Infrastructure
- One point of contact for everything infrastructure, namely storage, compute and hypervisor.
- Updates can be applied with very little downtime if any, and no longer needs weeks/months of preparation.
- Recovering data is as easy as booting up snapshots, which we are now using as a backup tool.
- Can't wait to roll out Scale Computing at our disaster recovery site for painless failover and failback.
- Wish there was flash drive when we purchased it, but they have it now, and actually have a retrofit for our existing units which we will consider implementing shortly.
Don't be afraid to Scale your virtual environment
- Initial setup and configuration was simple and straight forward. It was actually less than two hours from unboxing equipment to creating virtual servers in a live environment.
- Scale's dashboard is intuitive and easy to understand. Management of the system is level one simple. Monitoring performance and capacity of the stack is a single screen, simple and powerful tools.
- Backup and recovery of the servers and data is a hidden strength of Scale. Replication between the two Scale stacks is "Amazon Easy", a few clicks to select, schedule and submit. Monitoring progress and verifying status are all done from the dashboard, plus email notification of events if there are any issues.
- Built-in remote support by Scale was very valuable. Being US-based and having knowledgeable engineers, any issue can be quickly diagnosed and corrected. No need to create reports or download and send event logs. Scale support can see exactly what you are seeing on the stack.
- Scale Product delivery was also impressive. Yes, it's just a box you will eventually throw away, but the Scale Suitcases were easy to handle, unpack and provided secure transport of the stacks. Very nice touch.
- The only issue was the migration from other virtual environment required third-party software for advanced configurations (multiple partitions). As great as the Scale system is, providing an easier experience of moving off other virtual systems with built-in tools would be a bonus.
Scale HC3 in K-12
- The UI/UX is neat, well organized, and easy-to-use.
- VM performance is on par with the other big name virtualization technologies in the market.
- ROI is perfect for our size!
- The UI/UX, though easy to use, could be enhanced to provide additional metrics for VMs.
- 3rd party support for backup, or VM containers.
Scale HC3 is the Best
- Speed - Scale has increased our server performance drastically.
- Ease of use - The system is so easy to use and set up!
- Support - The scale support team is awesome and really knows their product.
- PRICE - You can't touch their price elsewhere for the performance that you receive.
- Make it easier to migrate from other hypervisors to scale without having to buy third-party software.
Simply Amazing, the Node Cluster that can't be beat!
- Hardware redundancy. Although I haven't had a need to use it yet, I know that all main failure points of any hardware has a redundant secondary to pick up in any failures.
- Easy upgrade; to update the Hyper visor or installing a new node is simple and easy to do. The configuration is a simple step by step process that even a non Techy person can follow.
- Automatic Snapshots; with the latest update for automatic Snapshots & Backups, I can control what backup schedule I want and mange my snap shots with ease
- VM Creation. I am constantly creating new Virtual machines for my programmers. With the easy to use tools provided by Scale, I can have a new VM up and running in seconds.
- Automatic Exports. Although they have the ability to create scheduled snap shots, I am waiting on the tool to allow us to automatically create exporting schedules to a 3rd party NAS
- Historical Reports, the Hypervisor allows us to see real-time reports of our cluster, but it would be nice to have detailed historical reports of this data to look for patterns in our software resources
Good for simple deployments.
- Simple
- Good Support
- V2V is a complete nightmare. We ended up just giving up. This is half the reason we don't recommend Scale any longer.
- Backups are a pain. VEEAM spoils you. With Scale you have to manage each endpoint at its layer. Frustrating, and the other half of the reason we don't recommend Scale.
It's worth checking out...
- Cost - very competitive on cost vs. the competition
- Pre-sales support - very thorough in understanding the environment and providing assistance in right-sizing the solution
- Post - sales support - very responsive with any issues
- Migrating existing virtual workloads into the cluster could be easier. Relies on third-party software to work.
Scale and the SMB Sector
- Single pane of glass management console with the ability to 'Tag' virtual machines into separate groups for organization, making it easy to view resource utilization and VM state. Additionally, direct in-browser remote control without the use of a third party plugin makes direct control seamless.
- Quick and easy cloning of virtual machines makes life easier, providing the ability to maintain a single master template for a given class of system.
- Moving a VM from one node to another is as simple as clicking Move, then selecting the target node. Because of the way Scale backend the storage for their VMs, all migrations are Live.
- Support reps are very friendly, and are available at varied hours of the day, thus not limiting you to a 9-5 window if there is a problem.
- On high memory nodes, the current view pane does not provide an easy means by which to view a detailed list of VMs on a given node. I'd love to see an additional view which provides detailed list of VMs per node, or something on the VM 'card' itself with the host node information.
- I'd like to see the ability to control how many replica copies of data are stored on a given cluster. The ability to configure the environment so that every node has a copy of every VM's data is something that I feel would be beneficial if you have the storage.
- Scale currently lack a comprehensive in-built backup solution which can communicate with external storage. The snapshot system is good, but the ability to configure an external storage point for redundancy would be appreciated.
Scale's feature set targets the SMB sector, particularly those companies without a full-time in-house IT team. This is a good fit, as they offer the ability to replicate VMs to a remote Scale cluster for redundancy and disaster recovery purposes. Their remote support is also well suited to this, as if there's a hardware issue, they will send a replacement chassis/disk, and walk you through the required physical steps for replacement, while they remotely manage the software-level changes required for a node which is joined to the cluster.
In a much larger environment, with a dedicated server team, I think that is where a company begins to outgrow Scale's targeted feature set.
- The true pioneers of hyper-convergence. If you are evaluating H/C, or are planning on deploying H/C, explore all the solutions out there, and you will find that Scale is the only one that is doing H/C at the base level, the way it should be. Products like Cisco's and others are add ons or afterthoughts and are not much different or just re-worded UCS models.
- The "Pay as you Grow" model afforded by Scale is the future of IT. Why would you EVER buy significantly more computing resources than you need for the very short term? Scale gives you the ability to tighten your capacity planning to meet the fiduciary responsibility modern IT demands.
- They push third party migration software, that is nearly 100% useless. In the 5 different cases we have tried to use it, we have needed significant tech support and they have not been able to even get the program to work outside of a lab environment. This is not a reflection on Scale other than they push this expensive software that they KNOW 100% doesn't work.
- We have experienced significant failure rate from the single node, noncluster servers. One device we have had to replace 2 times (we are on the 3rd one) in a month.
- Pay as you grow model.
- Digital Cloud Transformation of existing IT departments.
Tired of VMWare - Scale up to a better solution!
- Ease of Deployment
- Baked in replication
- US Based Support that cares about their clients
- Increased support from software manufacturers
My Scale Computing HC3 Review
- We are able to utilize all available within the servers
- We are able to control every aspect of our VMs from one central control panel.
- We are able to spin up a new or duplicate VM in seconds.
- Integrating a front end security control panel or integrate with 3rd party.
